Today, we celebrate one of the most important events in the liturgical calendar: the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. It marks the day when Jesus is revealed to the Gentiles as God's Son through the visit of the Magi, His Baptism in the Jordan, and the Wedding at Cana.
The Epiphany is among the three principal and oldest feast days in the Church alongside Easter and Christmas. And today is also the feast of our Cathedral!
The word epiphany comes from the Greek "epiphaneia", meaning appearance of manifestation. This symbolizes the revelation of Jesus as the Messiah, not only to Jews but to the whole world. Jesus' universality as the Savior is also seen in the visitation of the Magi, or the Three Wise Men or Kings. They, although Gentile, are a part of God's plan for all nations to worship the Messiah.
We are reminded that the Lord is the Savior, the Word incarnate ... He is Christ the Light that shines for all!
By attending our feast day Mass today at the Cathedral, the faithful may gain a plenary indulgence under the normal conditions: visiting the Cathedral Church, going to confession and receiving Holy Communion within a fortnight, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father.
Likewise, join us at the plaza for our 1st Sunday of the month fellowship! As you exit the Great Doors of the Cathedral, we have chalks for you to bless your homes this New Year. Please limit one packet per household.
